This page contains a brief overview of selected projects realized at the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics.

PhD Thesis :: Interaction of Loudspeaker and Microphone Arrays for Teleconferencing Applications (2002-present)


The aim of this project is to develop a real-time front-end for teleconferencing and automotive applications, with the main focus on the interaction of
  • Robust adaptive beamforming, with
  • Acoustic echo cancelation,
  • Acoustic feedback suppression, and
  • Speech signal enhancement algorithms.
This project is funded by AKG Acoustics GmbH, Vienna.

bin_ambi.OSC :: A Sound Server Application for Real-Time Binaural Audio Rendering in Pure Data (PD) (2006-present)


The aim of this project is to provide a position tracked real-time sound server environment with binaural rendering for sound installation arts, incorporating a VICON camera full-body motion tracking system.

The proposed system is based on bin_ambi, the IEM's binaural rendering environment for Pure Data (PD). We provide a client-server based solution, where the position data is handled via OSC (open sound control) protocol.

iem_adaptfilt :: LMS Adaptive Filters in PD (2005)


An external library for Pure Data (PD) providing least mean square (LMS) adaptive filtering algorithms.

bin_ambi :: Real-Time Rendering Engine for Virtual (Binaural) Sound Reproduction (2002-2005)


Further improvements to the Head Position Related Sound Reproduction System by extending the system to 3D virtual acoustic spaces, and minimizing the computational load to enable the system to run as a background task for scientific and artistic projects.

A collection of abstractions plus external library for Pure Data (PD) providing time-variant binaural rendering algorithms using a virtual Ambisonic approach is published under GPL license.

Master's Thesis :: A Head Position Related Binaural Sound Reproduction System (2001 - 2002)


Development of a 2D binaural sound reproduction system using a virtual ambisonics approach incorporating time-varying listener position, room simulation and head tracking.Further, the localization accuracy has been improved by
  • Parameter opitmization using a psychoacoustical model programmed in MATLAB
  • Verification of the results by extensive listening tests.
The system is implemented on a TI TMS320C7611 as well as several Motorola chips
