Untersuchung der nichtlinearen Verzerrungen von Kondensatormikrophonkapseln

Boris Müller

This project aims in providing a measurement setup and writing a computer programm for the investigation in the capsule portions of nonlinear distortions in condensor microphones. Therefor, the principle of difference tone measurement is used. A literature research, especially in AES-papers, standarts and publications as well as internal investigations of Georg Neumann GmbH in Berlin will start the project. The measurement programm will be written as PD – patch (Pure Data). Pure Data is an object oriented programming language with graphical user interface, invented by Miller Puckette and now mentained at the IEM in Graz. It is shown, that the programming interface, that was thougt to be an computer music system, is also useful as signal processing software for measurement purposes. The rest of the setup consists of a standard soundcard and normal studio monitors on a specially build stand in a reflection free chamber.

With that setup, measurements on different microphones are maid, with special attention paid to differences in microphone types (dynamic microphones / condensor microphones), different capsule sizes (large / small diaphragm) and different capsule designs (symmetrically / asymetrically). Since the distortions of the microphone electronics are known, they can be substracted normaly. The project ist accomplished at the company Georg Neumann GmbH in Berlin.
