NICOLAS HODGES


was born in London in 1970. He has built up a reputation as one of the leading pianists of his generation, much in demand as a recitalist and concerto soloist, and receiving great critical acclaim for his performances (see reviews). He has performed throughout Europe - appearing at the major UK festivals, as well at Witten, Darmstadt, Berlin, Festival d'Automne (Paris), Ars Musica (Brussels), TFNM (Zurich), Luzern Festival - and in Scandinavia and the US. His concerto engagements have included performances with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Bamberger Symphoniker, Philharmonia Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, Athelas Sinfonietta (Copenhagen), Endymion Ensemble and Matrix, and he broadcasts regularly for BBC Radio 3 and other radio stations.


Hodges is equally active in several fields: nineteenth century, early twentieth century and contemporary music. His substantial repertoire prior to 1900 includes works by Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Chopin, Liszt and Brahms, while his twentieth century repertoire includes works by Debussy, Bartók, Schoenberg, Berg, Webern, Stravinsky, Ives and Busoni.


In the field of contemporary music he plays both the classics of the Avant-Garde (such as Stockhausen and Barraqué) and works from the latter decades of the 20th Century and first years of the 21st. He has close working relationships with many composers including Adams, Birtwistle, Carter, Ferneyhough, Harvey, Kagel, Knussen, Lachenmann, Neuwirth, Nørgård and Stockhausen. He gave the historic world première of Bill Hopkins' extraordinary Etudes en Série (1965-72), as well as the world première of works by Boehmer, di Bari, Cappelli, Clarke, Dillon, Finnissy, Furrer, Pauset, Alwynne Pritchard, Sciarrino and Wuorinen. Several composers are currently writing for him, including Ablinger (work for solo piano with CD), Connolly (Piano Concerto, to be premiered Autumn 2003 with the BBC SO), Rebecca Saunders (Double Concerto with Teo Anzelotti, Accordion; to be premiered Autumn 2004 at Donaueschingen) and Sciarrino (Seventh Nocturne).


An energetic recording artist, critically acclaimed CDs have been released on col legno (Hopkins), BVHAAST (Boehmer), Dischi Ricordi (Di Bari), Metier (Connolly) and Metronome (Finnissy), with forthcoming releases from Kairos (Neuwirth), Metronome (Gershwin) and ECM (Sciarrino) (see discography). His chamber music activities include a duo with pianist Rolf Hind, Trio Présence with Mieko Kanno and Graham Waterhouse, as well as collaborations with Irvine Arditti, Mario Caroli, Pascal Gallois, Garth Knox and André Richard.


Nicolas Hodges has given masterclasses at the Darmstadt International Summer Course for New Music since 2000, and at the Dartington International Summer School since 2001.
