Sonification of EEG-data for clinical diagnostics concerning patients suffering epilepsy

Annette Wallisch

The EEG (elektroenzephalogram) is a diagnostic method used on patients with epilepsy, cerebral function disorders, tumors and insults. Characteristics of this method: good resolution of data concerning time, but bad resolution concerning space. The usual way of diagnostics happens in a visual mode by special EEG-software, which can be enriched by a patient’s video.

Hypoheses: Sonification of EEG-data is a further step to multi-media diagnostics in epilepsy. Final aim of the project would be the possibility to hear and watch the data synchronically. Sinification can ease the daily routine of monitoring with acoustic signals, which alert the staff to react quickly on atypical brain events (epileptic fit). Moreover we expect to gain more information about epileptic characteristics in general.

Literature contains main topics as neurology/ epilepsy and acoustics / sonification. Empirical reports contain results of sonification, TaDa’s and sound examples.
