Alumnae

With the vitas of our alumnae we will encourage jung women to study electrical engineering and audio engineering.

Through the following link you can access further information about the studies in electrical engineering and audio engineering.

To give the presentation a more personal touch, we asked our alumnae to provide a brief biographical statement, reflecting their own experiences with the education program. The site is not completed yet and under permanent construction, capturing the complexity of this program. We would be very pleased if we could also report about your experiences here.

Cornelia Falch

After finishing technical high school for electrical engineering in Innsbruck (HTL Elektrotechnik) I enrolled for the studies Audio Engineering in Graz. Supported not only by my large interest in the technical field and my enthusiasm for music, my decision was furthermore substantially affected by the unique, inter-disciplinary character of this course. During my time at university I became member of some facilities, e.g. AES student section, study committee or study group for equal treatment. In addition I participated in the Erasmus exchange programme spending one term at Edinburgh University.

I wrote my diploma thesis with the IEM, where I also gained first experiences as a researcher and lecturer after graduation. I got involved in different project cooperations with relevant companies like AKG Acoustics and AVL List. My PhD thesis, in the area of digital audio signal processing, evolved from a research project of the IEM and AKG Acoustics and was co-funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG).

At the moment I am with the Institute for Integrated Circuits in Erlangen. My main research work deals with the improvement and development of audio codecs (e.g. well-known formats co-developed at IIS are mp3 or HE-AAC) for object-based multi-channel audio signal content. Accordingly my responsibilities include co-editing the current ISO/IEC Standard MPEG Spatial Audio Object Coding (MPEG SAOC).

In my spare time I primarily enjoy sports activities like climbing, mountaineering and ski touring. I also favour visiting concerts, the theater or cinema or playing my guitars.

Christina Leitner

I was born in 1982 as oldest of three girls in Linz (Upper Austria). Grown up in a nearby village, I attended a Gymnasium (secondary school) with focus on languages in Linz. Despite of this choice I was always interested in mathematics and later also chemistry. Besides school, I played the piano in our school band. I had already learned the piano for sometime in the music school in my village. For graduation I naturally choose chemistry and music among others.

For long time, I was not sure what branch of study I should choose, but I was sure that I wanted to study. When I heard about the Electrical Engineering-Sound Engineering studies, i seemed to be an interesting option. The combination of engineering and music was very appealing to me. When I came to know that I had to pass an entrance examination I had a little doubt if I would pass it. (However, I absolutely wanted to study in Graz, so I thought in case I would not pass I would start studying Electrical Engineering-Biomedical Engineering, which seemed to be interesting as well.) So I looked for a place in a dormitory, prepared for the examination, went to Graz and did the examination. Then, on my birthday, I heard that I had passed! So there were no more obstacles that prevented me from studying ...

Meanwhile, I have finished my studies after 14 semesters, the average duration, and I can say that the years of study were a very good time. I must state that it was not always easy, but I managed everything and I could (if necessary) always rely on the support of my colleagues. I always appreciated this personal atmosphere, that you know (almost) all students of the same year.

Since one year I have now been working at the Institute of Signal Processing and Speech Communication at Graz University of Technology and I am going to write a PhD thesis.

My field of research is machine learning. One branch of machine learning is speech recognition. This is the connection to my studies, where one main focus was speech communication. In the end, my school education is also helpful in this area!

Veronika Putz

took her M.Sc. degree at Electrical Engineering – Audio Engineering at the Technical University of Graz, Austria. Afterwards, she was employed for four years as teaching and research assistant at the Institute for Measurement Technology, Johannes – Kepler - University of Linz, Austria. At current, she works on her Ph.D-thesis. Her main fields of interest have (for now) switched from audio engineering: The topics of her Ph.D-thesis belong to industrial image processing, non-destructive surface inspection techniques, and 3D shape recognition.

Gerda Strobl

Gerda Strobl
