Rigid sphere microphone arrays for spatial recording and holography

Peter Plessas

Diploma thesis (pdf. 1.137KB)

According to recent research in this field, this thesis will outline the different design paramters for spherical microphone arrays solving "interior problems", i.e. the description of an incident soundfield. Apart from the physical structure of the sphere itself and its significance in the interpretation of the data received, the actual microphone positions (sampling of a function across a spherical surface) determine the essential parameters of the array. In accordance to the general description of these issues, an actual implementation of a microphone array will be simulated in an analytical and numerical model. Measurements from that very array will be related to the theoretical results and discussed thoroughly.

This thesis is part of a collaboration between the IEM - Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics, University of Music and Performing Arts Graz and CNMAT - Center For New Music and Audio Technologies, University of California, Berkeley.
