A Topology of Algorithmic Composition

Gerhard Nierhaus

The area of algorithmic composition is as multifaceted as all thinkable possibilites of generating musical structure through any kind of a rule-based approach. “Rule-based” refers herein to a broader concept than the term may suggest to them familiar with the concepts of AI or similar fields of interest. In other words generating musical stucture through problem-solving using reductional mathematical procedures. This paper attempts a synopsis of the various branches of algorithmic composition regarding relevant historical aspects.
