Klangstille 1995

Window-mounted installation with 550 piezo loudspeakers, audio tape and computer-controlled MIDI instruments.

Presentations: Mathematics library and glassed-in passageway of the Technische Universität Berlin, within the festival Klangfenster '95, November 1995.
Klangstille belongs to the series of plant-like loudspeaker installations as described above in the installation Silent Music.

In November 1995 an installation consisting of 400 loudspeakers was mounted on the large windowed areas of the Berlin Technical University's Mathematics Library. Another 150 speakers were mounted in a glassed-in walkway leading into the mathematics building. The library, which is situated within the modern architecture of the university's main campus, continued normal daily activities during the exhibition of the work.

In the library, the installation also consisted of numerous miniature light sensors. These sensors, which were linked to the MAX program previously mentioned in the description of Weather Station, allowed the installation to incorporate subtle acoustic reactions to changes in ambient light. Sounds of the installation were designed to lightly colour the silence of the existing space and to create a calm, quiet environment conducive to concentration and study.
